“Hunter, the red golden retriever, tends to be a rascal and has elected himself king of the beach.”
Have you had any problems with bullies? How do you handle them? In the book Tebow Tails~Caspar’s Conquest, the characters are modeling how to respond and handle bully behavior. Hunter, the red golden retriever character in Tebow Tails~Caspar’s Conquest is bullying Caspar, the English cream golden retriever. Tebow, the boxer and Caspar’s best friend, notices Caspar is quieter than normal and looks sad.
“Tebow asks Caspar in passing, “Are you okay Caspy?” Caspy shrugs, “Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?” “You just seem quiet.”
“Hunter gives Caspar a snarky glare and cuts in front of him at the starting flagpole for the Frisbee races. Caspar cautiously backs up and does not speak up. Tebow notices that Caspar looks sad and wonders why.”
“As Caspar is just about to snag the flying Frisbee, Hunter roughly tackles him to the ground, lying on him as flat as a pancake. Caspar struggles to get out from underneath Hunter’s belly, but Hunter firmly holds down his paw. Caspar pants and says to Hunter, “Stop!”
Caspar woefully says, “I’m sad that Hunter has been bullying me when we play games on the Island.”
Bailey, Hunter’s older brother, listens as Tebow and Caspar share the story about Hunter’s rowdy behavior during the Frisbee game.”
“Bailey growls, “That brother of mine needs to be taught a lesson on how to treat his friends kindly. Hunter would not be a happy camper if we treated him poorly.” Caspar chimes in, “Maybe Hunter just needs a hug.”
Hunter looks at Caspar and shamefully says, “You saved me even though I was mean to you. I’m sorry mate.” Caspar beams and humbly says, “Apology accepted. I’m thankful you’re okay.”
As authors, parents, and educators, we should teach our children and students the skills of how to handle and respond to bully behavior: 1. Act with awareness, Stay Calm, and Confident. Tell the bully to “STOP!” 2. If the bullying continues, inform a friend. 3. Next, report to a trusted adult. and 4. It is important that if a child witness’s another child being bullied, they should know with confidence that it is safe to go tell an adult.
Tebow Tails~Caspar’s Conquest also shows empathy and forgiveness towards Hunter. All of the characters learn a valuable life lesson – “Treat your friends the way you would want to be treated.”
