Treat your friends nice!
The message of TEBOW TAILS~Caspar’s Conquest is a life lesson about how to respond or handle bully behavior. Although Hunter, the red goldren retriever character in the book, was friendly to humans, he was a bully to other dogs in real life. Tebow’s best friend, Caspar, the English cream golden retriever, was bullied by Hunter and as a result, is kind of a skittish guy but loyal friend. TEBOW TAILS; Caspar’s Conquest is relevant in today’s society because the issue of “bullying” either verbally, physically, relationally, or cyberbullying has become a major concern with children and adults of all ages. A child and/or adult being bullied can lead to low self-esteem, depression, and sometimes even suicide. Anti-bullying campaigns/how to handle bully behavior and efforts to reform bully behavior are one of the serious issues in today’s society, the educational curriculum, and the school systems throughout the country. Most schools have adopted Anti-bullying campaigns in an effort to reform bully behavior. Educators/Teachers/Parents would like to teach children appropriate social skills and how to build and maintain friendships. Also, they would like to enhance their skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, negotiation strategies, and common courtesy. I learned about the topic of bully behavior and friendship through both my background as an educator from Kindergarten thru College and my own personal experience. If a child is facing bully behavior, a parent, teacher, or caring adult should teach them the skills of first tell the bully to Stop, stay calm, and walk away kindly. If it continues, inform a friend, and remain confident. Next step, report the bully behavior to a parent, teacher, or a caring adult. Also, it is important that if a child witness’s another child being bullied, they should know with confidence that is safe to go tell an adult. My favorite excerpt from the book:
Bailey, the yellow lab, growls, “That brother of mine needs to be taught a lesson on how to treat his friends kindly. Hunter would not be a happy camper if we treated him poorly.” Caspar chimes in, “Maybe Hunter just needs a hug.” Tebow smiles inside and thinks, “That is exactly why Caspar is my best friend.”
